Can I have your autograph….?

In the Commons on February 22, 2012, David Cameron said of The Times’ ‘Cities Fit for Cycling’ campaign: “If we want to encourage the growth in cycling we’ve seen in recent years, we need to get behind campaigns like this.”

And probably for the one and only time I do, I completely agree with the Prime Minister.

A report was produced by the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group (APPCG), outlining why cycling is so important to Britain. You can read the report for yourself here.

The idea to get behind the scheme and promote cycling is so it can help tackle Britain’s obesity crisis, save millions from NHS budgets, boost the economy and reduce congestion on our roads and trains.

In The Times’ story, it quotes that “Britons spent more than £1.5 billion on buying bicycles last year, the most since records began. More than 762,000 people commute to work by bike in Britain.”

It’s vitally important that the recommendations in the report ARE acted upon. So far, the Prime Minster has endorsed the report but has fallen short of committing his Government to it.

British Cycling have produced this video in which Chris Boardman and Laura Trott explain why it’s so important.

The report needs to be debated by the Backbench Business Committee so needs at least 100,000 signatures to reach that point.

So, if you believe that cycling should be promoted more, please click here and sign the e-petition.

Thank you.
